First HW for Innovative Course Building Group

Hello again to everyone.  I think our first meeting was a great success and I look forward to the rest of the year.  I have been teaching mathematics at the college level for about 15 years, and I have never had the opportunity to teach a course outside of the traditional mathematics curriculum.  I am hoping to create a course to investigate and to celebrate the successes of mathematicians (and possibly scientists) “on the fringe”.  (Thanks to Amy Kelley for the catchy phrase.)  This group would likely include, but not be limited to,  women,  precocious youngsters and other amateurs, people of color in the US and Europe, and native peoples anywhere.   Some pertinent civic issues are:

1.  gender studies

2.  the role of higher education in the community

3.  cultural biases in education

Hello! I’m definitely interested to see where you go from here — if you ever want to talk about “stereotype threat” as it relates to math performance, I’d definitely be able to direct you to some materials!
